Mineral Blue and the anti-waste law 2020
What does the anti-waste law of February 2020 really say? How do our strategy and our range commit to advancing the circular economy? Our products are eco-designed. But what does this mean?
French law for anti-waste
Since January 2020, flagship measures have been put in place to change waste quotas, reuse and recycling criteria and improvement of the circular economy. They are expressed through Law No. 2020-105 of February 10, 2020 on the circular economy and the fight against waste, which aims to achieve zero plastic in 2040.

Indeed, we have all seen in our daily lives the first measures in January 2020 with the ban on plastic cups and plates, cotton swabs,… Then, at the beginning of 2021, the ban on straws, disposable cutlery…
In short, progressive measures for the permanent end of single-use plastic!
We will also note the recent press release (February 2021) from the Mc Donald’s company on compliance with these directives, by gradually eliminating plastic toys in Happy (banned from January 1, 2022), straws and plastic cutlery, which were removed in November 2019.
But what is single-use plastic? It is packaging designed to be used once and then thrown away.
This definition therefore corresponds as much to a plastic stirrer whose effective duration of use can vary on average between 3 and 30s, as to a tube of toothpaste whose duration of use will be spread over 60 days.
The objective of eliminating all single-use plastic from our daily lives is therefore still a complex issue, which must modify and change our habits in depth.
Some specialists are also wondering about the implementation of such a broad ban. Indeed, plastics are used for their characteristics: tightness, resistance, lightness, flexibility, easy to sterilize… Thus, for example, in the case of plastic bottles, replacement by glass bottles does not seem to pose a problem. Ditto for dry products, which can be packaged in cardboard or offered in bulk. But in other cases, such as for cleaning products or dangerous products, which are sensitive to UV rays, oxidation or humidity, or even for fresh products (meat, fruit, etc.), problematic is more important.
Finally, for each of the applications where plastic is the current solution, it will be necessary to find an alternative to the materials used in the plant world (or algal by extension), biodegradable / compostable, or even completely recyclable channels (such as glass for example).
For our part, the Ecosynia strategy is part of an approach that aims to support these changes and thus, to set up production methods that reduce environmental impacts: this requires an eco-responsible analysis of the entire cycle. of life of our products (from conception to end of life).
Beyond our microalgae cultivation facilities which do not present any release of substance into natural environments (water, air, soil), or the eco-design of our extraction laboratory which hosts a particularly energy-efficient extraction process , we want to emphasize the choices we have made on our Mineral Blue range.
The first point of environmental consideration is our choice to exclusively formulate all our phycocyanin-based products with ancestral 808 mineral water from the Pays d’Aix-en-Provence. Beyond the perfection of its minerality, its absence of human-related pollution (0 nitrate) or the powerful energy benefits provided to our finished products by the use of pure and unpurified water, it was it simply makes sense to work locally to design our extracts.
The electrical energy savings generated by the exclusive use of pure and unpurified water are of the order of kWh per m3 of water used.
In addition, the phycocyanin that we produce is currently packaged in sterile bags in order to greatly reduce the environmental impact compared to other packaging solutions for this “blue gold” of spirulina, often offered in single-use plastic doses, sometimes not even recyclable.
Be careful, here we are comparing products based on natural phycocyanin without preservatives, and without sugar or sweetener. Otherwise, indeed, the solution of a multi-use glass bottle would be preferable from an environmental point of view, but we cannot compare this type of product, which puts the product in contact with air during each of your shots, which is impossible for our all natural solutions, formulated from fresh phycocyanin, not stabilized by sugar or chemicals. In addition, and in order to go further on this point, we are currently developing our recycling process for used bags by recovering them and reprocessing them for reuse (passage of sterilized water, then ionizing radiation) without generating any additional waste. .
Regarding our current development of new products, and more particularly for the natural active energy drink (attention for connoisseurs, this is neither an energy drink nor an energy drink, but an all-natural active energy drink, we will provide details in a future news) and for the energy gel for athletes, here is what it is:
For the drink, we designed it in a glass bottle in order to respect the environment, to get out of plastic materials, despite their advantageous prices and their attractive technical characteristics, and therefore the requirements of the anti-waste law.
We are currently working on the development of an innovative alternative packaging based on plant and algal materials, which should see the light of day at the end of 2021.
Finally, for gels, we are currently developing with our packaging partner a roll of vegetable film allowing us to offer you energy gel sticks without any use of plastics.
To bring consistency with the above, our packaging or overwrapping is exclusively of cardboard type, printed with vegetable inks (ecological alternative to mineral inks) and all the wedging products that we use are again biologically sourced or entirely recycled.
